Every June Apple gathers its developer army. The 2026 WWDC showed us what’s coming. iOS 27. iPadOS 27. macOS 27. But let’s keep it simple. The iPhone matters most right now.

Launches this fall. Probably September. When the new hardware drops, so does the software.

Here’s the thing about compatibility. If your phone runs iOS 26? It’ll run this. No need to upgrade hardware just for the update. Except maybe for the heavy lifting AI does. Some of that only happens on the new glass slabs. The Air. The 17 Pros. Because those have the brains built in.

Here is what is different.

1. Siri is different now

Siri gets an AI. In the name. Literally. It also becomes an app. Not just a button. A place. You can open it on Mac, iPad, and iPhone. Chats sync everywhere.

It uses Google models now. Weirdly. But it works. Better than before. Closer to ChatGPT or Gemini. You can talk to it. Show it pictures. It understands audio better too.

Want the best version? Voice cloning. Customization. That stays locked to the iPhone 17 series. On-device processing keeps those features away from older chips.

2. Fix the glass look

iOS 26 introduced Liquid Glass. Some hated it. Too transparent? Too distracting? Apple listened. Sort of.

Go to Settings. Find Appearance. There’s a slider now. Turn the glass effect down if you hate it. Or crank it up if you like the shimmer. Your call.

3. Parenting gets harder tools

Kids use phones. A lot. iOS 27 adds shields for that.

It starts when you set up the kid’s phone. A new Setup Assistant asks who this device belongs to. Then comes ‘ask to browse’. They try to open a new site? Your phone pings.

Time limits get smarter. Set hours for ‘Entertainment’. Or make schedules vary by day. Less screen time on Monday. More on Friday. The logic is yours to define.

4. Alarm volume. Finally.

You want a quiet ringtone. A loud alarm. Until now, that was impossible.

iOS 27 splits them. Go to Sounds & Haptics. Turn off ‘Match Ringtone Volume’. Set the alarm loud. Set the ringer polite. Sleep is preserved.

5. AirPods EQ exists now

Wait really long enough. Eventually it arrives. Equalizers for AirPods are here in iOS 27.

Tweak the bass. Cut the treble. Boost the mids. It works for Pro 2 and 3. And AirPods 4 too.

How to find it? Settings > Bluetooth > tap the ‘i’. Then Audio > Equalizer > Custom. Tinker away. Your ears decide what is good.

6. Draw in iMessage

Boring texts? Not anymore.

The Messages app gets drawing tools. Hit the plus sign. Draw. Send it. Quick sketches. Scribbles. Bad art. It all sends through the pipe.

7. Photos look less cartoonish

Apple was behind. Chatbots made better pictures. Now iOS 27 catches up via Image Playground.

No more cartoon filters. Only. You can get photorealism now. If you want it.

Edit them too. Ask Siri or the interface to change a color. Add a tree. Point to the spot where it goes. It fills the gaps.

Does it matter if it’s fake? Not when the result is better.

8. Maps look up close

Apple Maps flies over cities now. 3D models. But iOS 27 makes them sharper.

AI adds detail. Individual trees. Street signs. Smoother transitions. Some cities only, but the view is much nicer. You see the world better from above.

9. Fix the composition

Take a bad photo? Off-center subject? Awkward angle?

Photos app adds ‘Reframe’. Keep the person. Move the camera virtually. Pan around. Zoom. Tilt.

AI fills the empty space it creates. Merges new pixels with old. Looks seamless. Usually. It isn’t the real shot anymore. But it is a nicer one.

The update drops in months. Will you wait for Pro? Or just take what comes?
