Stop Annoying Spam Calls: A Guide for iPhone and Android Users

16

Spam calls are a persistent problem, wasting time and posing risks to privacy. While scammers adapt quickly, modern smartphones offer built-in tools to fight back. Here’s how to reduce unwanted interruptions on both iPhones and Android devices.

iPhone: Blocking and Screening Calls

Apple’s iOS includes features designed to filter out spam. Call Screening, introduced in iOS 16, puts an automated voice between you and unknown callers, asking them to state their reason for calling. The transcript appears on your screen, letting you decide whether to answer.

To activate this:

  1. Go to Settings > Phone.
  2. Tap Screen Unknown Callers and choose Ask Reason for Calling.
  3. Enable the Unknown Callers toggle to separate calls from unknown numbers into a dedicated list, keeping them off your main call log.

Important : Ensure your contact list is current. Otherwise, legitimate calls from new numbers might be silenced or screened. You can also manually Block Contact by tapping on a spam caller’s blank avatar in the Phone app.

Android: Built-In Spam Protection

Android phones, especially Pixels, offer robust spam detection.

  • Caller ID and Spam Protection : Enable this in the Phone app settings (menu > Settings > Caller ID and spam) to flag suspected scam calls before you answer.
  • Scam Detection : This feature warns you during a call if Google identifies it as a scam, though it’s not foolproof.
  • Call Screening : Similar to iOS, this lets unknown callers explain their purpose before you pick up.

Samsung Galaxy phones have Caller ID and spam protection but currently lack the full call-screening feature available on Pixels.

Third-Party Apps and Carrier Tools

Both iOS and Android users can supplement built-in tools with third-party apps. Popular options include RoboKiller, Hiya, and Truecaller. Many carriers also offer security apps: AT&T’s ActiveArmor and Verizon’s Call Filter Plus are examples.

Blocking Numbers

Blocking specific numbers is effective, though scammers often change them. To block:

  • iPhone : Tap the blank avatar in the Phone app and choose Block Contact.
  • Android : Open the Phone app settings and select Blocked numbers to block individual numbers or automatically silence calls from unknown contacts.

Reducing spam calls requires vigilance and using all available tools. Scammers are persistent, but modern smartphones and third-party apps give you a fighting chance. Staying proactive and keeping your contact list updated will help minimize unwanted interruptions.
