No one does.

It usually starts with a whim. One teacher sick of carrying answer sheets. Another trying an online quiz. Then the ripple effect spreads, often without a map.

This lack of planning causes friction. That is the point. The friction isn’t a bug in digital assessment. It’s just the feeling of breaking a habit that’s stuck for thirty years.

Workload, Not Tech

People say teachers resist tech.

That’s not true.

They resist extra work. And they doubt screens can do the job of a pen. Think about the rhythm of grading. The physical act of marking, commenting, correcting. Asking someone to trust a pixel with that? Huge ask.

Successful schools don’t go big immediately. They go small. One class. One term. Show a teacher they actually saved two hours. Then watch them believe it. Don’t promise savings. Show the empty desk at the end of the day.

The Hardware Trap

Not everyone has wifi at home. Not everyone has a laptop.

Policy doesn’t fix this. Assuming it does excludes the students who need the most support. These are often the schools that benefit most from less paper overhead, ironically. If you ignore the gap, you run a paper parallel system. Now you’re doing the job twice.

Check the infrastructure. Be honest. If the bandwidth is shaky, digital exams will fail. Don’t hope it works. Know it works.

Cheating Fears

Bring up online exams and the word “cheating” pops up. Usually before the first question is asked.

Some worry is real. An exam at home isn’t the same as one in a sealed room.

But most of it? Noise.

Assumptions.

Simple fixes exist. Randomize the questions. Set hard time limits. Keep the test on campus, in the lab. Supervise it. You don’t need spyware. You just need a teacher watching the door. Talk to your staff about it. Don’t let the vendor’s sales pitch be the only thing addressing security. Trust is built on transparency, not magic buttons.

Who Owns the Data?

You are collecting info on minors.

Names. Scores. History. This matters.

“The software handles it” isn’t an answer. It’s a liability waiting to happen.

Ask the hard questions early. Where does the data live? Who can see it? If you delete the app tomorrow, where does that year’s score go?

If the answer isn’t clear on day one, it won’t get clearer by term three.

Don’t assume compliance. Verify it.

The Tool Sprawl Problem

This one drains everyone.

Adopt the quiz maker. Then the response collector. Then the spreadsheet. Then the messaging app for parents. Suddenly the teacher is clicking between four tabs to do what used to be one pile of paper.

It’s exhausting.

Efficiency doesn’t come from more tools. It comes from fewer hand-offs. Digital assessment wins when data flows automatically. It loses when teachers have to manually type results from one screen into another. Streamline or fail.

Keep Your Eyes Open

None of this stops you from going digital.

It should stop you from rushing blindly.

The schools that succeed aren’t the tech giants. They are the ones admitting their starting line is muddy. They move one step. Ask “did that work?” Wait for an answer. Then step again.

Friction is normal.

The goal isn’t zero resistance. The goal is moving forward while looking where you are stepping.

Does your infrastructure match your ambition? Maybe. Maybe not. That’s okay. Just start with the truth.

Schools don’t switch overnight. No one does. It usually starts with a whim.
