Locals had seen her there the day before, too. Something was wrong.

The footage is stark. Two subadult eagles—hungry, ambitious, likely just trying to carve out their own slice of territory—closed in. The adult didn’t flee. She couldn’t. Instead, she played dead, flipped onto her back, and bared her talons. She fended them off, sure. But she couldn’t take to the sky.

Los Angeles County Parks’ San Dimas Raptor Rescue arrived. They picked her up. She’s now in the hands of a specialty care facility, somewhere we haven’t been named yet.

But let’s be real about who this eagle likely is.

If you’ve spent any time watching the Big Bear Valley livestream this year, you know this isn’t just an eagle. It’s almost certainly Jackie. The internet mom. The matriarch who, alongside her mate Shadow, has captivated millions watching their nest from San Bernardino National Forest.

Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV)—the nonprofit team behind the cameras—confirmed Tuesday they are in direct contact with the rehab center.

“Jackie is stable,” they posted on Facebook. “We are waiting on diagnostic results that can take a few days. Jackie is a strong eagle.”

Meanwhile, back at the nest, Shadow hasn’t missed a beat. He’s still there, guarding Sandy and Luna, the current chicks who are fast approaching their first flight. He’s an excellent father. He’s keeping the territory secure while the community holds its breath for Jackie’s full recovery report.

Identifying Jackie Amid the Chaos

Here’s the problem: Big Bear Lake sees a lot of eagles. Not just Jackie and Shadow. Visitors come and go. And because these birds aren’t banded, visual ID from a distance is tricky.

FOBBV hadn’t spotted Jackie on their feeds for several days prior to the rescue. Without a band tag, how do you know if the bird on the ground in Dana Point is the same one who built a mega-nest east of Los Angeles?

It’s circumstantial evidence piled high. The timing. The description. The fact that she was found fending off younger birds rather than hunting. It points squarely at Jackie.

If it is her, the timeline is tight. The chicks are weeks old. The parents are a package deal in the wild. But for now, the focus is on the grounded female.

“She is in the best place she can be,” FOBBV stated, sharing the County video of the extraction. “When we have additional information, we will update this page.”

The 2026 Nest: Sandy and Luna’s Countdown

Let’s not lose sight of the nest.

Jackie and Shadow’s 20026 season has been a rollercoaster, to say the least. January brought heartbreak: ravens destroyed two eggs. Most couples would walk away. This pair didn’t. They laid two new eggs.

Chick 1 arrived on April 4 at 9:33 p.m. PDT. Chick 2 followed hours later on April 5.

FOBBV announced the names back in May: Sandy and Luna. They are thriving. For now.

But the window to stay safe is shrinking. Chicks typically remain in the nest for 10 to 14 weeks. That’s when the real danger starts.

Why Fledging Is a Death Trap for Many

We romanticize the first flight. It’s beautiful on camera. It’s not always safe in reality.

Before they leave the nest, eaglets face a gauntlet. Hawks. Ravens. Owls. Other eagles looking to steal food or claim territory. Weather is a killer, too. Remember 2025? A March snowstorm dumped two feet of snow on the nest. One of their three chicks didn’t make it. The survivors, Sunny and Gizmo (chosen from 50,000 fan submissions), did.

Survival rates? They’re brutal. Only about 70 percent of bald eagle fledglings make it past this stage.

And once they’re down on the ground? That’s when cars become a major threat. Scavenging roadkill isn’t just unsanitary; it’s high-risk. A missed brake check on the wrong highway is often the end of the line for a juvenile eagle.

Jackie and Shadow: The Odds Are On Their Side

It’s easy to forget these aren’t just stats on a webpage.

The pair bonded in 2018. They raised chicks successfully in 2019. Then again in 2022. But 2023 and 24 saw egg failures. In the wild, only 50 percent of eagle eggs hatch. They’ve beaten the odds twice already.

If Jackie returns, the family dynamic resets. If she doesn’t, Shadow is capable of raising the young alone, though the stress is immense. He’s currently doing it, balancing territory defense with chick-rearing.

Where Do They Go From Here?

If Sandy and Luna survive to fledging—which they usually do at 10 to 14 weeks, with males often leading the way—where do they end up?

FOBBV tracks these movements when they can. Southern California eagles have been spotted as far south as Baja. As far north as British Columbia. Even east, to Yellowstone National Park.

They don’t tag the eagles. Once those chicks leave the nest, they are ghosts in the system unless luck (and good tracking) intervenes.

How Can You Help?

If the thought of Jackie or the chicks keeping you up at night, there’s a way to channel that anxiety into action.

Environmental groups are currently fundraising to protect Jackie and Shadow’s foraging grounds. The threat isn’t predators. It’s development. Real estate. Expansion.

They need $10 million. The goal is to preserve the habitat so the eagles have room to hunt and raise families without human interference encroaching on their airspace.

Head to SaveMoonCamp.org if you want to donate. It’s tangible. It’s immediate. It’s better than doomscrolling.

Jackie is stable. Shadow is on duty. The chicks are growing.

The world waits for the next update. It always does.

It wasn’t a graceful exit. An adult bald eagle lay on the ground near Dana Point Park on July 17.
