He was also an optician with a knack for solving practical problems that others ignored. Born in Norwich in 1776, he lived until 1862. By 1801, he was teaching mathematics at the Royal Military Academy in Woolwich. That job gave him the time to dig into numbers. He published <em>New Mathematical Tables<\/em> in 1814. It became famous as <strong>Barlow\u2019s Tables<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This book listed factors and functions for every number up to 10,000. It was incredibly accurate. Engineers and scientists relied on it for decades. The first one appeared between 1827 and 1832. He enclosed liquid carbon disulfide between two pieces of glass. It was a clever way to manage light refraction.<\/p>\n<p>His second design came in 1833. This one combined flint glass with crown glass. That combination is the standard for correcting chromatic aberration. It remains the basis for many modern optical instruments.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Barlow lens<\/strong> is used to increase the power of an eyepiece.
