A rhetorical question is a literary device where you ask something you don\u2019t actually expect an answer to. The response is already there, hidden in the context. It\u2019s also called an interrogatio or erotema. You use it to hammer home a point, suggest an idea, or force someone to pause and think.<\/p>\n

We see this trick all the time in speeches and argumentative essays. The goal isn\u2019t to solve a mystery. It\u2019s to persuade. It simulates a dialogue, but really, it\u2019s a monologue disguised as a conversation. The speaker assumes the audience shares their viewpoint. If you have to ask why the sky is blue, you probably aren\u2019t looking up.<\/p>\n
This isn\u2019t a standard query. It doesn\u2019t seek information. It doesn\u2019t want an explanation. It wants agreement.<\/p>\n
Do you need a question mark to make it work? Sometimes. The punctuation helps signal the tone. But not always. If the structure is clear enough, the context tells the reader it\u2019s rhetorical.
