You see a clock with a IIII or IV, or you read about a Super Bowl number, and you recognize a Roman numeral. But the system itself is often a mystery. It isn\u2019t just about memorizing letters. It\u2019s about understanding a logic that relies on addition and subtraction.<\/p>\n<p>The foundation rests on seven specific symbols. Each one maps directly to a number in our modern Hindu-Arabic system.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>I<\/strong> equals 1<\/li>\n<li><strong>V<\/strong> equals 5<\/li>\n<li><strong>X<\/strong> equals 10<\/li>\n<li><strong>L<\/strong> equals 50<\/li>\n<li><strong>C<\/strong> equals 100<\/li>\n<li><strong>D<\/strong> equals 500<\/li>\n<li><strong>M<\/strong> equals 1,000<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Knowing these values is the first step. But it doesn\u2019t tell you how to combine them. That\u2019s where the real mechanics come in.<\/p>\n<h3>The Addition Rule<\/h3>\n<p>When you place a symbol after another symbol that has the same value or a higher value, you add them up. This is the straightforward part.<\/p>\n<p>Think of VI. The V is 5. The I is 1. Since I is smaller than V and comes after it, you add 1 to 5. The result is 6.<\/p>\n<p>Take LXX. The L is 50. The first X is 10. The second X is 10. You stack them up. 50 plus 10 plus 10 equals 70. This additive style worked for most numbers. It just kept getting longer.<\/p>\n<h3>The Subtraction Rule<\/h3>\n<p>Here is where it gets tricky for beginners. If you put a smaller value before a larger one, you subtract.<\/p>\n<p>Consider IV again. The I is 1. The V is 5. Since 1 is smaller and sits in front, you subtract it from 5. The answer is 4.<\/p>\n<p>This rule explains why VI is 6 but IV is 4. They are strict rules designed to keep the numbers from becoming unwieldy strings of identical characters.<\/p>\n<h3>Scaling Up with Bars<\/h3>\n<p>What happens when you need to write 5,000? Or 10,000? The standard seven symbols stop at M for 1,000. To go higher, the Romans used a bar over the number.<\/p>\n<p>Placing a bar over a numeral multiplies its value by 1,000.<\/p>\n<p>So, a V with a bar over it isn\u2019t just 5. It is 5,000.
