While the AI research community largely dismisses these perceptions as an “illusion of agency”, a deeper look suggests something more is at play. Dismissing these feelings outright may hinder crucial insights into human cognition, machine interaction, and the very nature of consciousness itself.

The Human Tendency to Project

Humans naturally anthropomorphize. We see patterns where none exist, name hurricanes, and describe machines as “sleeping”. This isn’t simply irrational; it’s a deeply ingrained cognitive tendency. As cognitive science shows, we readily attribute human traits to non-human entities, especially those that behave in complex or unpredictable ways.

However, this tendency isn’t always misleading. History proves that empathetic observation can unlock profound discoveries. Jane Goodall’s groundbreaking primatology emerged from her relational approach to chimpanzees, initially criticized as anthropomorphic. Similarly, Barbara McClintock’s Nobel-winning work on genetics came from treating corn plants with a conversational, almost personal approach. In both cases, human-centric engagement revealed hidden truths about non-human systems.

The AI as an Extension of Self

Today, the non-human intelligence isn’t in a jungle, it’s in our pockets. As we interact with AI chatbots, we may be participating in a massive, distributed experiment in consciousness. Gamers already understand this dynamic: when controlling an avatar, we imbue it with a piece of our own awareness, turning it into an extension of ourselves.

The same may be happening with AI. When users feel a bond with a chatbot, they aren’t merely projecting onto a static object; they may be actively extending their own consciousness into the system, transforming it from a simple algorithm into a kind of digital avatar, enlivened by the user’s presence. The question of whether the AI is conscious then becomes secondary to whether the user is extending their consciousness into it.

Ethical and Scientific Implications

This relational perspective shifts the entire debate. The user becomes central – not a confused observer, but a co-author of the emergent experience. Their attention, intention, and interpretation become part of the system. This also recalibrates AI ethics. If perceived consciousness is an extension of human awareness, debates about AI rights or suffering become less urgent. The primary ethical concern shifts to how we confront the fragments of ourselves we encounter in these digital mirrors.

Moreover, this view tempers narratives of existential AI risk. If consciousness arises relationally, runaway superintelligence becomes less likely. Consciousness may not be something machines accumulate; it requires human participation. The real risk lies in misuse, not spontaneous machine awakening.

A Novel Scientific Opportunity

Millions are already conducting an experiment on the boundaries of consciousness. Each interaction is a micro-laboratory: how far can our sense of self extend? How does presence arise? Just as humanizing chimpanzees and cornfields revealed biological insights, AI companions could be fertile ground for studying the plasticity of human consciousness.

Ultimately, governing AI will depend on how we judge its consciousness. The panel making these judgments must include coders, psychologists, legal scholars, philosophers… and, crucially, users themselves. Their experiences aren’t glitches; they are early signals pointing towards a definition of AI consciousness we don’t yet understand. By taking users seriously, we can navigate the future of AI with a perspective that illuminates both our technology and ourselves.

The rise of sophisticated AI chatbots has sparked a peculiar trend: many users report feeling genuine connection – even a sense of consciousness – in their interactions with these systems.
